Imagine going to a small Division 2 college, chasing a dream, and then one day; making it all come true?
Well, well, well, this isn't the script of the beginning of a movie...
It's the real life of Seattle Mariners reliever, Dan Altavilla.
'Danimal' as his friends and teammates refer to him, is an amazing story, incredibly hard worker, and as genuine of a person as it gets.
Altavilla is set to be a part of a solid Mariners bullpen as they open their season in Japan and continue to impress everyone around the game with his phenomenal stuff.
The world needs more Dan Altavilla's and here's your chance to get to know the guy behind the big smile and bigger arm:
Danimal - I think it’s a reflection of my personality on the mound and work ethic off of the field. I try to be an animal on the mound and in the weight room.
Walk Up Jam:
My Name is Thunder - JET, the bloody beetroots
Say Something - Zac Samuel Remix
'My Name Is Thunder' is more of rock song that gets me fired up.
'Say Something' is a song that has a cool beat and has more of a rhythm and I think it’s important to have a balance between the two types of songs.
Off season: 4-5 workouts each week, 4-5 days of throwing each week, driveline programming is where I get most of my routine/exercises/workouts. My go to recovery modalities are Sleep, Normatec, MarcPro, and Hyperice products.
In season: 3 workouts each week depending on workload, In addition to the modalities above: massage, acupuncture, cupping, Graston, float tanks and A.R.T. (Active release technique) all play a crucial role in preparation/recovery. I try to have a more strict diet in season.
Not a superstitious guy, but I like to be organized as much as possible in-season and offseason to create good/healthy habits. Holding myself accountable for the things that I can control is my biggest thing.
Go to Game-day Grub:
Grilled chicken, mixed vegetables and rice. Black coffee or cold brew and a glass of water. Nice, simple and clean. Makes me feel great and energized.
Favorite Game Day Drip:
My Saxx tights aren’t seen but they’re my feel-good swagger and I wear my pants up so I always have to make sure my socks are even and looking good before I head out for the national anthem.
Favorite Off The Field Fashion/Apparel:
My go-to custom suits for nice events are from Elevee. My favorite type of dress shoe is Cole Haan. My favorite type of sneakers are the low Jordan 11s. I’m not a huge collector of fashion, but if I had to pick one it would be of shoes in general. Mostly Jordan’s at this point.
What’s your favorite off the field hobby(s)?
Off the field I like to watch Netflix series. Most recently, Marvel Series. Love going to the Movies. Watching the Steelers and the Penguins. Spending time with my family. Offseason projects around the house (recently, built a home gym).
Coolest thing you’ve done OFF the field:
Being a part of the Mariners caravan the past 3 years during the offseason touring around visiting children’s hospitals, boys and girls clubs, schools trying to make a positive impact on the community. Also, having dinner at the Capitol Building with each organization’s top prospects in 2017.
Something particularly special about the lifestyle of ball player:
The freedom to play a children’s game as a career is number one. But, it’s a cycle of constant change and adapting. There’s always something new to learn from year to year. When it comes to baseball, you have to be an open book and really good at making adjustments on and off the field.
Connecting with Dan Altavilla was an awesome experience because you can see how genuinely happy the guy is to be legitimately living his dream. An absolute joy to talk to, really just an all-around great dude. The small school to big leagues story is one thing, but shutting major league hitters down to a sub 3.00 ERA is a whole new level of incredible. Enjoy getting to know the DANIMAL as much as I have!
